On April 13, 2005, The Faith & Politics Institute, Members of Congress and labor leaders gathered to honor the Civil Rights Movement's legacy of economic justice. Event hosts Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Rep. Frank A. LoBiondo (R-NJ) and AFL-CIO President John J. Sweeney joined in honoring:
- Rev. Dr. James Orange, a civil rights and labor organizer who worked closely with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during the sanitation workers
strike in Memphis in 1968. - William Lucy, International Secretary-Treasurer of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, and one of the highest ranking African-Americans in the labor movement.
- The Beloved Community Center, a nonprofit located in Greensboro, N.C. that fosters King's vision of the "beloved community" through community activism and advocacy, including support for a mid-1990's community-wide resolution of a dispute between UNITE! and K-mart and a current Truth & Community Reconciliation effort to help Greensboro heal the wounds of a painful chapter in its history.
- Georgetown University students who organized the Living Wage Coalition and carried out an 8-day hunger strike to win living wages for employees of
Georgetown University.
