An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Scholar Faith Massey

Project Description
Vicki Robinson is a Richmond, Indiana native who, as a Black student, helped lead the 1971 Richmond High School sit-in against racial discrimination in school activities and opportunities. Her mother founded Mothers of Action to support students like Vicki fighting injustice. The sit-in challenged systemic inequities and inspired community solidarity, ending in arrests that shaped Ms. Vicki’s confidence and lifelong advocacy. She hopes future generations value education, mental well-being, and collective action and remember that fighting for justice requires both courage and care. This oral history ensures that Ms. Vicki’s story is preserved and honored, so that those who come after can learn from it.
