Benefits of Planned Giving
Planned giving offers a unique opportunity to establish a legacy relationship that supports the work of the the Faith & Politics Institute. A planned gift also offers you many potential advantages: the opportunity to increase spendable income, the elimination or reduction of capital gain taxes and possibly federal and state estate tax savings.
There are a number of ways to plan your gift to the Faith & Politics Institute.
Types of planned giving
-
There are several types of gifts that first pay income to you and your family and then help the Faith & Politics Institute. These also can enable you to dispose of illiquid assets in exchange for income and tax benefits. Some examples are:
The lead trust is a gift arrangement that can help you transfer wealth to the next generation while sharply reducing gift and estate taxes.
You can make a gift to the Faith & Politics Institute through a trust or annuity that will pay you and/or another beneficiary annual income for life. At the death of the last income beneficiary, the remaining principal is transferred to the Faith & Politics Institute.
A charitable remainder trust is a separate tax-exempt account into which you transfer your gift. The Faith & Politics Institute will serve as trustee and thus handle the investment of the trust assets as well as legal and accounting administrative matters.
-
Your will can include gifts in the form of:
Cash
Stocks
Bonds
Appreciated Securities
Real estate
personal property.
Business Interests
Life insurance
Your bequest designated to the Faith & Politics Institute can be specified in your will, trust or estate plan as a specific amount, a percentage of what you will give or the amount remaining once you’ve paid your other bequests.
Sample Language for Your Will:
“I give to the Faith and Politics Institute, a District of Columbia nonprofit corporation, headquartered in Washington, DC, the sum of $_______ (or___% of my estate, or the property described herein) to be used for _________________ (specify the purpose, like unrestricted funds, a specific program, etc.).”
-
If you are interested in using your retirement savings to support the Faith & Politics Institute you can consider one of the following options:
You can name the Faith & Politics Institute as a beneficiary of your retirement fund – all or just a percentage.
If you’ve reached the age where you need to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your IRA, you can donate that money to the Faith & Politics Institute as a Qualified Charitable Distribution, which will be excluded from your taxable income.
Either can be arranged by contacting the administrator who oversees your retirement plan.
-
If you deed a house or seasonal home to the Faith & Politics Institute you and/or your spouse retain the right to live in the house for the remainder of your life. You receive an immediate income tax deduction for the gift. The Faith & Politics Institute will most likely sell the property when you or your spouse no longer need it. Be sure to work closely with your real estate advisor, accountant, attorney and the Faith & Politics Institute to establish your future gift.
