An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Leader Samaria Chambers

Project Description
In 2018, nineteen Black women ran for elected judgeships in Harris County, Texas and won. These women affectionately became known as ‘Harris County Black Girl Magic.’ This historic election increased diversity within the local judiciary and aligned the demographics of the court system more closely to the community that it serves. Houston, Texas, the county seat, is the fourth most populous and the most racially diverse city in the United States.
The Honorable Lori Chambers Gray was one of the nineteen judges elected. I spoke with Judge Gray to understand her inspiration to pursue a career in criminal justice, explore her views on the racial disparities within the system and highlight how her work brings positive change to the community.
