An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Leader Rhonda Fields

Project Description
Rooted in a tradition often excluded from dominant philanthropic narratives, Black communities have long practiced generosity—through acts both monumental and everyday. Nikia Washington, Director of Engagement & Communication at the McGregor Fund, contributed to an oral history project exploring this legacy. She reflected on her leadership within The Soul of Philanthropy: Michigan, which brought a dynamic exhibition to Detroit honoring Black giving traditions. This project emphasized the power of naming oneself a philanthropist, and challenging systemic omission. Her reflections underscored that philanthropy is rooted not only in wealth, but in love, community, and a legacy of resistance.
