An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Fellow Michael Hernandez

Project Description

David Chase and his wife Kimberly Rachal did not stumble upon the historic Church of the Epiphany—they were longtime neighbors who knew it well, even tying the knot inside its storied sanctuary. Years later, as church bells quiet across the country and sacred spaces face uncertain futures, they took a leap of faith. The result: Epiphany Center for the Arts, a multi-venue campus breathing new life into the historic West Loop landmark. In this oral history, David shares how a place of worship became a home for the arts—and what it means to preserve beauty, memory, and meaning in a rapidly changing neighborhood.
