An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Fellow Ahmaad Edmund

Project Description
Established in 1956, Southern Star Missionary Baptist Church, located in Louisville, Kentucky, will observe its 70th anniversary in 2026. This significant institutional longevity is firmly anchored in the foundational leadership of its founder, the late Reverend Dr. Charles E. Kirby Sr. Dr. Kirby’s pastoral ministry spanned 53 years, commencing in 1956. Beyond his ecclesiastical responsibilities, Dr. Kirby was widely recognized for his multifaceted contributions as a dynamic theologian, a prominent civil rights figure, an entrepreneur, and an accomplished singer.
To highlight the enduring influence of Dr. Kirby’s ministry, an interview was conducted with Mrs. Modestine “Tina” S. Anderson, a former trustee and congregant of over six decades. This conversation uplifted the impact of Dr. Kirby’s pastoral vision, which has profoundly affected thousands throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky for several generations. His leadership fostered connections with distinguished civil rights leaders, including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. A.D. King, Rev. Ralph D. Abernathy Sr., Rev. W.J. Hodge, Rev. A.D. Jones, and Rev. Dr. Charles Elliott Jr. and many others in turbulent times. Dr. Kirby passed away in August 2025 at the age of 96. May this project serves as a lodestar for justice and societal change, advocating that we challenge inequitable norms and embrace “good trouble” a principle championed by the late Congressman John R. Lewis.
