An Oral History Project Conducted by John Robert Lewis Fellow Serene Singh

Project Description

My oral history project focuses on the life of Dr. G.B. Singh, a U.S. Army Colonel (ret.), Sikh American, and author known for his critiques of Mahatma Gandhi. The central focus of this project is to explore his experiences as a military officer who upheld his articles of faith making him the first Sikh military officer in the United States to retain his articles of faith, his journey as a Sikh educator and activist, and his views on civil rights, equality, and moral resistance. Additionally, this project aims to understand how Col. Singh’s Sikh beliefs, military service, and scholarly work shaped his stance on justice and truth-telling, particularly concerning misconceptions about nonviolent leader narratives and global understandings of justice.
